Useful Phrases
As part of our traditional teachings, there are certain phrases shown below that you may find useful.
Ohayo gozaimasu
(ohio go-zah-ee-mass) -
"Good morning" (used before 10:00am)
Konnichi wa
(cone-knee-chee-wah) -
"Hello" or "Good day" (used after 10:00am)
Komban wa
(comb-bahn wah) -
"Good evening"
Oyasumi nasai
(oh-yah-sue-me nah-sigh) - "Good night" or "Rest well" (used before bedtime)
Sayonara
(sigh-yoh-nah-rah) - "Goodbye"
Arigato gozaimasu
(ah-ree-gah-toe go-zah-ee-mass) - "Thank you" (used for something which has not yet been done)
Arigato gozaimashita
(ah-ree-gah-toe go-zah-ee-mash-tah) - "Thank you" (used for something which has been completed)
(Sensei,) domo arigato gozaimashita
(sen-say, doe-moe ah-ree-gah-toe go-zah-ee-mash-tah) - "(Teacher,) thank you very much for what you have done" (spoken by students after aikido class and after being personally instructed)
Onegai shimasu
(oh-nih-guy she-mahss) - "I make a request" (spoken when one wishes to practice with a fellow student or a teacher)
Gomen nasai
(go-men nah-sigh) - "I'm sorry" or "Excuse me" (spoken after inadvertently touching someone)
Do itashimashite
(doe e-tah-she-mash-tay) - "Don't mention it" or "You're welcome"
Ogenki desuka
(oh-ghen-key des-kah) - "How are you? are you in good spirits?"
Okagesama de
(oh-kah-ghe-sah-ma day) - "Fine, thank you" (a response to "ogenki desuka")
Hajimemashite
(ha-gee-may-mahsh-tay) - "How do you do?" (used when introduced to someone for the first time)
